How to Boot into Safe Mode When Laptop Screen is Black
Facing a black screen on your laptop is frustrating, especially when you can hear the internal fan spinning or see the power lights on. When Windows fails to load the visual interface due to a corrupted graphics driver, bad update, or malware, booting into Safe Mode is the best way to fix it.
Safe Mode starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and services, bypassing broken display drivers so you can restore your screen. Here is how to boot into Safe Mode even when your laptop screen is completely blank.
Method 1: Use the Forced Shutdown Trick (WinRE Trigger)
Since you cannot see the screen to access Windows Settings, forcing Windows into the Automatic Repair environment is the most reliable method.
Press and hold the Power Button for 10 seconds to force your laptop to shut down completely.
Press the Power Button again to turn the laptop back on.
As soon as you see the manufacturer logo (HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer) or the loading dots, press and hold the Power Button for 10 seconds to force shutdown again.
Repeat this process one more time (turn on, then force shut down).
On the 3rd or 4th boot attempt, leave the laptop alone. Windows will display "Preparing Automatic Repair" followed by the Advanced Startup / WinRE screen.
Once you reach the blue Choose an option screen:
Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings.
Click Restart.
After your laptop reboots, press 4 or F4 on your keyboard to enable Safe Mode (or 5 / F5 for Safe Mode with Networking).
Method 2: Use the Blind Keyboard Shortcut Sequence
If your laptop screen is black because of a corrupted display driver, Windows might actually be running behind the dark screen. You can use this blind keyboard command to force a restart into Safe Mode.
Turn on your laptop and wait about 30 seconds for Windows to reach the sign-in screen (even if you cannot see it).
Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete once.
Press Tab 7 times to select the Power menu icon.
Press Enter.
Press the Up Arrow key once to select Restart.
Hold down the Shift Key on your keyboard, and while holding Shift, press Enter.
Keep holding Shift for 5 seconds, then release it. This forces the system to restart directly into the Advanced Startup menu, where your screen should display again so you can choose Safe Mode.
Method 3: Use a Windows Installation USB Drive
If the forced shutdown trick fails to open the repair screen, you can trigger Safe Mode using a bootable Windows USB flash drive.
Plug a bootable Windows 10 or 11 installation USB into your laptop.
Power on the laptop and tap your boot menu key repeatedly (F12 for Dell, F9 for HP, F12 for Lenovo, or F2 for Acer).
Select your USB drive from the boot list.
On the Windows Setup screen, click Next, then click Repair your computer in the bottom-left corner.
Go to Troubleshoot > Command Prompt.
Type the following command exactly as shown and press Enter:
bcdedit /set {default} safe boot minimal
Close Command Prompt and click Continue. Windows will automatically boot into Safe Mode.
(Note: To exit Safe Mode later, open Command Prompt in Windows and run bcdedit /delete value {default} safe boot before restarting).
What to Do After Entering Safe Mode
Once you successfully reach Safe Mode, you can troubleshoot the root cause of the black screen:
Uninstall Broken Graphics Drivers: Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click your GPU, and select Uninstall device. Restart your PC normally to let Windows install a fresh display driver.
Uninstall Recent Updates: Go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates to remove recent updates that triggered the display glitch.
Run SFC Scanner: Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run sfc /scan now to repair corrupted system files.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why won't my laptop enter Safe Mode with a black screen?
If the display remains black even in Safe Mode or BIOS, the issue is likely physical hardware failure, such as a damaged LCD panel, a loose internal ribbon cable, or a dead backlight, rather than a Windows driver problem.
How do I get out of Safe Mode when I am done?
Press Windows Key + R, type msconfig, press Enter, go to the Boot tab, uncheck Safe boot, click Apply, and restart your laptop boot, click Apply, and restart your laptop
