How I Stopped Spam Calls and Fake SMS on My AI Smartphone (My Personal Setup)

A few months ago, my phone was ringing constantly. Between fake bank KYC update alerts, digital arrest scams, and automated robocalls offering instant loans, answering an unknown call felt like walking through a minefield.

When I upgraded to a modern AI-powered smartphone, I decided enough was enough. I tested every built-in toggle, carrier setting, and smart call-screening tool to see what actually works.

If you are tired of spam calls interrupting your day or suspicious SMS links cluttering your inbox, here is the exact setup I personally use to keep my phone silent and secure.

1. How I Configured Google AI Call Screening (Android & Pixel)

If you use a modern Android phone (especially Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, or Xiaomi), your phone already has built-in AI tools designed to filter spam before your ringtone even plays.

Here are the exact settings I toggled on:

1.Enable Native Spam ID: Phone App Settings.

Open your Phone app, tap the three dots (...) in the top-right corner, and go to Settings > Caller ID & Spam. Turn on both See caller and spam ID and Filter spam calls.

2.Set Up AI Call Screen: Automatic Screening.

Under Call Screen, set the protection level to Automatically screen. When an unknown number rings, the AI answers silently first, asks the caller why they are calling, and transcribes their reply on your screen in real time.

3.Turn On SMS Protection: Google Messages.

Open Google Messages, tap your profile icon > Messages settings > Spam protection, and toggle on Enable spam protection.

My experience: Once I enabled automatic AI screening, roughly 80% of automated robocalls hung up immediately when the AI assistant answered. They didn't even make my phone vibrate.

2. Setting Up iPhone AI Call Filtering (iOS)

When testing on an iPhone, Apple’s built-in Live Voicemail and Silence Unknown Callers features provided a similar level of protection.

Steps I Followed on iOS:

1. Go to Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers and toggle it On. (Calls from numbers not in your contacts go straight to voicemail without ringing).

2. Go to Settings > Phone > Live Voicemail and turn it On.

3. When an unknown caller leaves a message, you get a live text transcript on your lock screen as they speak. If it’s a genuine call (like a delivery driver), you can pick up mid-message.

3. The Indian Carrier Step I Never Skip: DND Registration

Built-in phone settings work great, but stopping telemarketers at the network level makes a huge difference. In India, registering for full Do Not Disturb (DND) blocked a massive chunk of promotional SMS messages for me.

• Via SMS: Send an SMS with the text START 0 to 1909 from your mobile number.

• Via Provider Apps: Open your service provider app (Jio, Airtel, or Vi), navigate to Account Settings > DND Preferences, and select Block All Categories (Fully Blocked).

4. The Rules I Live By to Avoid Phishing Scams

AI tools act as a great firewall, but scammers constantly change tactics. To keep my personal data safe, I follow three strict rules:

• Never tap links in SMS: Even if the text claims to be from your bank about an account freeze or electricity bill, never click the URL. Open the official app or website directly.

• Never share OTPs during an incoming call: No real bank officer or delivery partner will ever ask for a login OTP over a voice call.

• Report & Block immediately: Whenever a spam call or text manages to slip past my filters, I take 5 seconds to tap Report Spam & Block so the community blocklists get updated.

The Result?

Since setting up this combination of native AI call screening and network-level DND, my spam calls dropped from 8–10 a day down to almost zero. When an unknown call does come through, my phone handles the conversation first, giving me full control over whether to pick up.
